Privacy policy

What we collect, what we do with it, and your choices.

Effective date: October 30, 2026

BackyardStack ("we", "us") runs backyardstack.com, a guide and directory for people planning an ADU (a small second home on the same lot as a house). This page explains what we collect and what we do with it.

What we collect

  • Newsletter signup. Your email address and which page you signed up from.
  • Quote requests. What you type in the form: name, email, phone, ZIP or location, project type, size, timeline and notes.
  • Builder listing requests. Company name, contact name, email, phone and notes.
  • Technical data. Your IP address is used briefly to block spam and repeated form submissions. Our host also keeps standard server logs.
  • Site usage. We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views and visits in aggregate.
  • Saved on your device only. The "My Stack" shortlist and planning tools like the estimator and quiz save your choices in your browser's local storage. That data stays on your device and is not sent to us.

How we use it

  • To send The Backyard Letter, our newsletter, if you signed up.
  • To answer your quote request and send you a confirmation email.
  • To connect you with builders from our directory who serve your area, when you ask for quotes.
  • To handle listing requests from builders.
  • To keep the site working, block spam and understand which pages are useful.

Email and unsubscribing

Every newsletter email has an unsubscribe link. Click it and we stop sending. You can also email hello@backyardstack.com and we will remove you.

Sharing

  • Builders. When you request quotes, we share your request details with builders from our directory who serve your area so they can contact you. We do this only when you ask for quotes.
  • Sponsors. We do not share your information with sponsors or advertisers.
  • We do not sell your personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
  • We may disclose information if the law requires it.

Service providers

  • Buttondown sends The Backyard Letter and stores the newsletter list. When you sign up, Buttondown emails you a link to confirm.
  • Resend sends quote confirmation emails.
  • Vercel hosts the site, runs our forms and provides page analytics.

They process data for us under their own terms and security practices.

Cookies

We do not use advertising cookies. Vercel Web Analytics is designed to work without cookies. The site uses your browser's local storage only for the features described above, and you can clear it any time in your browser settings.

Your California privacy rights

If you live in California, you can ask us to tell you what personal information we have about you, to delete it, or to correct it. You can also opt out of any sale or sharing, though we do not sell or share it. We will not treat you differently for using these rights. Email hello@backyardstack.com with your request. We may need to confirm your identity first.

How long we keep it

Newsletter emails are kept until you unsubscribe. Quote and listing requests are kept as long as needed to handle them and for our records, then deleted.

Children

This site is for adults planning a home project. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 16. If you think a child has sent us information, email us and we will delete it.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update this page and the effective date above.
