Financing & loan programs

Most ADU owners pay with savings or home equity. In California's statewide survey, owners used cash, bank loans and family money, and of those who borrowed, two-thirds used a home equity line of credit. Only 1 percent used a construction loan. The options below are a renovation lender, a federal renovation mortgage you get through a lender, and a state housing finance agency. Read how people actually pay for an ADU first.

Order is editorial. Descriptions come from each company's own website, last checked October 2026. A listing is not an endorsement. How we work.
